Maroon Bells Aspen Colorado: One of my favorite places anywhere

in
USA

The Maroon Bells, an iconic spot near Aspen, Colorado, isn’t just a beautiful place to me, it’s one of my favorite places on earth.  Somewhere I’ve returned to more than a dozen times, these majestic peaks are simply stunning in every season.

Summer Splendor: Hiking to Heaven

In summer, the Maroon Bells are a riot of color. Wildflowers paint the meadows in vibrant hues, and the aspen leaves shimmer in the sunlight. Of course, the classic view of the Maroon Bells mirrored in Maroon Lake is breathtaking, the kind of image that imprints itself on your soul. But for me, the magic truly unfolds on the trail to Crater Lake. This hike, while moderately challenging, is pure joy. I love winding through the aspen groves, the sunlight dappling through the leaves, the sound of rushing streams accompanying my steps. And then, you arrive at Crater Lake. The view is simply stunning – the Maroon Bells reflected in the still water, framed by the surrounding forest. It’s a moment of pure serenity, a feeling of being completely connected to nature. It’s a view I could sit and absorb for hours.

To get to the trailhead in summer, the shuttle from Aspen Highlands is the way to go. It’s easy, convenient, and helps preserve the tranquility of the area. You’ll even get a bit of history from the forest service trained driver along the way.

Winter Wonderland: A Snowmobile Dream

Winter at the Maroon Bells is a different kind of magic. The world is hushed, covered in a blanket of pristine snow. The peaks become even more majestic, their stark beauty accentuated by the crisp winter air. Getting there in winter is an adventure in itself. The road closes, transforming the journey into something truly special. Snowmobile tours are offered through T-Lazy-7 Ranch.  The thrill of gliding through the snowy landscape, the anticipation building with every turn, and then… the Maroon Bells appear. Covered in snow, they are even more awe-inspiring.

My Personal Tips for Visiting:

  • Plan ahead: Winter snowmobile tours require reservations and do sell out so be sure to book in advance.  Summer shuttles get a bit crowded so be sure to arrive early so you don’t have to wait too long.
  • Go early (in summer): Beat the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the morning. The light is also incredible for photography.
  • Bring your camera: You’ll want to capture every moment, every view. This place is endlessly photogenic (a few of my own photos are below).
  • If hiking to Crater Lake, give yourself a few days to acclimatize first: From personal experience this is perhaps my strongest recommendation.  Crater Lake sits just over 10,000ft above sea level. Need I say more?

The Maroon Bells aren’t just mountains; they’re an experience. They’re a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world. They’re my sanctuary, and I hope they become yours too.
