There is no place on earth quite like Chefchaouen. Nestled in the Rif Mountains of Morocco, the “Blue Pearl” feels less like a city and more like a watercolor painting come to life. Our recent trip here was a lesson in slowing down, sipping mint tea, and letting ourselves get lost in an endless maze of azure.
If you are planning a trip to Morocco, we discovered that you only need one glorious night to capture the feel and flavor of this unforgettable city. Here is how we made the most of our short, sweet stay.
Our Luxurious Base: Dar Echchaouen
The moment we arrived just before midday, we checked into Dar Echchaouen, and it was the absolute perfect home base. This beautiful hotel is perched just outside the main gate of the medina, offering a sense of tranquility that is hard to beat while still being steps away from the action.
The property itself is stunning—traditional Moroccan design meets luxurious amenities. A true highlight was the beautiful outdoor pool, surrounded by lush gardens, which was the ideal spot to relax after our drive from Fes.
The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive, making us feel instantly at home. And before our departure the next morning? The excellent breakfast spread—a delightful mix of local pastries, fresh fruit, eggs to order and strong coffee—was the perfect farewell.
An Afternoon Lost in the Blue Medina
We wasted no time, heading straight into the heart of the blue city in the early afternoon. The beauty of Chefchaouen isn’t found in checking off a list of museums; it’s found in the wandering. We spent the afternoon simply meandering through the medina. Every corner offers a new shade of blue, from powder-soft sky tones to deep, electric indigo.
- The Vibe: It is noticeably more relaxed than the bustling souks of Marrakech or Fes. We could browse woven blankets, leather goods, and spices without feeling overwhelmed.
- Lunch Spot: We eventually found our way to the main square, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam. We grabbed a table right in the large square, shadowed by the striking Kasbah and the Grand Mosque. There is nothing quite like people-watching here while enjoying a delicious, authentic lunch.
The Golden Hour: Sunset at the Spanish Mosque
As the afternoon light softened, we decided to chase the sunset. We embarked on the short hike, about 30minutes, up to the Spanish Mosque (Bouzafar Mosque).
The trail takes you out of the medina and up a hillside overlooking the city. It’s a moderate walk, but absolutely worth the effort. We arrived just in time to watch the sun dip behind the Rif Mountains. Watching the city transition from daylight blue to twinkling twilight gold was the absolute highlight of the trip. It was a glorious moment of pure peace looking out over the entire blue valley.
Final Verdict: The Perfect One-Night Stop
While you could easily spend more time here, we found that arriving midday, spending the afternoon and evening exploring, and departing the next morning after breakfast was just enough time to fully immerse ourselves in the atmosphere. It felt like the perfect recharge stop before continuing our journey.
Chefchaouen is a mood, a moment, and an essential Moroccan experience.
