Game, Set, Match! My Day at the Australian Open in Melbourne Australia

in
Australia & New Zealand

The Australian Open – the first Grand Slam of the year, the pinnacle of summer tennis in Melbourne. I recently had the chance to experience the electrifying atmosphere firsthand, and let me tell you, it lived up to all the hype.

Getting to Melbourne Park from the city center was a breeze thanks to the free tram service. These dedicated trams run frequently and directly to the venue, making it super easy and convenient to get there without worrying about parking or traffic. Just hop on and enjoy the ride!

Once inside, the energy is palpable. The buzz of the crowd, the thwack of tennis balls, and the excited commentary create an infectious atmosphere. There are three main types of tickets which offer varying levels of access:

  • Rod Laver Arena (RLA) Tickets: These are the premium tickets, granting you access to the main show court where the biggest matches take place. Think nail-biting five-setters and legendary showdowns. These tickets usually guarantee a reserved seat for the entire day session or night session.
  • Margaret Court Arena (MCA) Tickets: MCA is the second-largest show court and also hosts high-quality matches. These tickets offer a great viewing experience and are usually a bit more affordable than RLA tickets.
  • Grounds Passes: These are the most budget-friendly option and give you access to all the outside courts, practice courts, and the general grounds. You can wander around, catch exciting matches on smaller courts, and soak up the overall atmosphere. This option is great for seeing up-and-coming players and enjoying the festival-like environment.

I opted for the RLA, and it was fantastic! I managed to catch two matches with top seeds, including the ultimate men’s champion and in between saw some thrilling matches on outside courts, witness players practicing up close, and explore the various entertainment and food stalls.

Speaking of food, the Australian Open offers a wide variety of culinary delights. From gourmet burgers and fish and chips to Asian-inspired dishes and healthy salads, there’s something to satisfy every craving. And let’s not forget the drinks! You can find everything from an Aperol Spritz, refreshing beers and ciders to chilled wines and non-alcoholic beverages.

Beyond the tennis itself, the Australian Open is a social event. People from all walks of life come together to enjoy the sport and the festive atmosphere. There are live music performances, interactive games, and plenty of opportunities to relax and soak up the sun.

My day at the Australian Open was an unforgettable experience, especially having attended the US Open many times over several decades both at Forest Hills and Flushing Meadow. While the crowds are huge it never seemed crowde. The vibe is relaxed and very different than any other sports event I’ve been to. Whether you’re a die-hard tennis fan or just looking for a fun day out, I highly recommend checking it out.
