Nelson, New Zealand: A Whirlwind Overnight in the Sunshine Capital!

in
Australia & New Zealand

We recently had the pleasure of an overnight stay in this charming South Island city, often dubbed New Zealand’s “sunshine capital,” and it certainly lived up to the hype. Even in a short 24 hours, we managed to pack in some incredible sights, delicious food, and a healthy dose of natural beauty.

After checking in to our hotel we took a leisurely stroll through the Queens Gardens, right in the heart of town.  These botanical gardens are truly a hidden gem. We were particularly captivated by the incredible collection of cacti, never before having seen such a diverse and impressive display outside of a specialized conservatory! From towering saguaros to delicate succulents, it was a spiky wonderland. The rest of the gardens are equally beautiful, with vibrant flower beds and serene water features, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.

As evening descended, our thoughts turned to dinner, and we were fortunate enough to snag a table at Hawker House.  Oh my goodness, what a meal! This vibrant eatery offers an incredible array of Asian street food inspired dishes, and every single plate was bursting with flavor. We indulged in some delectable street buns, “Naughty Nigiri”, and amazing perfectly cooked dumplings. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the food was simply outstanding – a perfect end to a perfect day.

The next morning, we began our day at Nelson’s quaint port.  It’s a charming spot, with fishing boats bobbing gently in the water, historic buildings lining the waterfront, and a relaxed, maritime atmosphere. We loved watching the activity and imagining the stories these vessels could tell.

Finally, before heading to the airport for our short hop flight to Wellington, we decided to do a short and incredibly rewarding climb to the Centre of New Zealand Lookout.  It’s a bit of a hike, but trust me, the panoramic views of Nelson city, Tasman Bay, and the surrounding mountains are absolutely breathtaking. It’s a fantastic way to get your bearings and appreciate the stunning landscape that cradles this vibrant city.

Nelson captured our hearts! Even a short stay is enough to experience its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural charm, and culinary delights. We can’t wait to return and explore even more of what this fantastic city has to offer.
