Stopping over at Chicago’s MDW (Southwest Style, of course!)

As a fairly frequent Southwest flyer, I’ve passed through Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) quite often over the past 30 years. And let me tell you, my recent stopover there was an absolute breath of fresh air! Much like NY’s Laguardia and a few other significant airport upgrades, I’ve witnessed MDW’s evolution, but the renovations completed in 2023 have truly transformed it into a surprisingly delightful transit point.

Southwest, being the dominant carrier at MDW, makes navigating the airport incredibly easy. You’ll find them primarily operating out of Concourse B, and since all concourses at MDW are connected past security, you don’t have to worry about re-clearing if you’re making a connection (unless it’s an international arrival).

Gone are the days of limited food options and cramped spaces. The Midway Modernization Program, completed in the fall of 2023, has done wonders. The airport now boasts a fantastic array of dining and retail options, with a real focus on local Chicago brands – which I absolutely love! Fellow travelers were also talking about how the expanded passenger screening area also made for smoother, quicker security lines, a true blessing.

But the real game-changer, and the highlight of my recent stopover, was discovering The Club MDW. This is Midway’s first-ever airport lounge, and it’s a really nice addition. Located conveniently in the Central Market (the main area after security, where Concourses A, B, and C intersect), it’s easily accessible no matter which gate your Southwest flight is departing from.

Stepping into The Club MDW felt like an oasis of calm amidst the airport bustle. The design is sleek and modern, with a nod to Chicago’s architectural heritage. Think comfortable seating, a tranquil “quiet zone,” and a welcoming atmosphere.  Food offerings were quite basic but tasty and I particularly appreciated the complimentary beverage service, which included some fantastic local brews and spirits. It’s a real step up from typical airport fare!

So, who can use The Club MDW?

Here’s the lowdown on how to get in and enjoy this fantastic new space:

  • Priority Pass Members: This is the easiest way to gain entry. If you have a Priority Pass membership through a credit card or other travel program, you’re good to go! Just present your card and boarding pass.
  • Day Pass Purchase: Even if you’re not a Priority Pass member, you can still experience The Club MDW. A day pass can be purchased for $50 by any Midway passenger with a valid departing boarding pass. This is a great option if you have a longer layover and want to relax in comfort.
  • Other eligible programs: The Club MDW is also part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection and Mastercard Airport Experiences, so check your specific card benefits if you carry those.

Important Notes for Access:

  • Access is generally permitted 3 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure.
  • Children under 2 years old are admitted free with an adult. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Alcoholic beverages are only available to passengers 21 years of age or older.

My Southwest stopover at MDW was truly elevated by these recent improvements. The airport feels more efficient, more modern, and genuinely more enjoyable. And with the addition of The Club MDW, it’s clear that Chicago Midway is truly stepping up its game for travelers. Next time you’re flying Southwest through the Windy City, make sure to check it out! You won’t be disappointed.
