The Majesty of the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road – From Cliff Tops to Sandy Shores

in
Australia & New Zealand

The Great Ocean Road is a stunning 243-kilometer (151-mile) stretch of coastal highway in Victoria, Australia. Just the name conjures images of windswept cliffs, crashing waves, and breathtaking vistas. And let me tell you, it lives up to every bit of the hype! Our recent road trip culminated in the undisputed highlight: the Twelve Apostles, and it was stunning, even though we visited midday, missing the famed sunrise and sunset glow.  The sheer grandeur of the Twelve Apostles captivated us.

Discovering the Twelve Apostles: A Natural Wonder

While the name suggests twelve, erosion has sculpted these formations into approximately eight magnificent stacks. Regardless of the number, the Twelve Apostles offer breathtaking views and a profound connection to nature’s power. Our journey began at the designated viewing platforms, where we captured stunning Great Ocean Road photography, showcasing the dramatic coastline and the towering limestone cliffs.

Gibson Steps: A Beach Level Adventure

For us, some of the real magic happened when we descended the Gibson Steps. This steep staircase leads down to the beach level, offering a completely different perspective of the Twelve Apostles. Walking along the sandy shore, with the towering cliffs looming above us, was an incredible experience. The power of the waves crashing against the base of the cliffs was palpable, and the feeling of being surrounded by such natural grandeur was truly humbling. This is a must-do for any Great Ocean Road tour.

Unexpected Wildlife: Little Penguins at the Twelve Apostles

Adding to the magic, if you go around dusk you may be fortunate to witness little penguins returning to shore at the Gibson Steps. While our schedule didn’t allow for this, the nightly ritual encounter with Australian wildlife is a highlight for many visitors.

Tips for Visiting the Twelve Apostles:

  • Best Time to Visit: While we missed it, sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic lighting for Twelve Apostles photography.
  • Weather Considerations: The Southern Ocean is known for its unpredictable weather. Since you’ll probably plan your visit weeks or months in advance, just be sure to pack layers and be prepared for wind and rain.
  • Allow enough time to Explore the Viewing Platforms and Descend the Gibson Steps: Take your time to appreciate the panoramic views and capture stunning photos.  Experiencing the Twelve Apostles from both perspectives is absolutely worth the time and effort
  • Parking: There is ample parking in the main Twelve Apostles parking lot which is well-marked and a short accessible walk to the viewing platforms suitable for all.  For direct access to the Gibson Steps, however, there is a small lot at the top of the stairs most people miss which can save a 1.1km graded walk (2.2km round-trip).
  • Photography: Don’t forget your camera! Capture the iconic Great Ocean Road scenery and any wildlife encounters.
