Delayed Airline Baggage: Two Simple Tips

Losing your luggage is a traveler’s nightmare. While it’s estimated that a small percentage of bags – thankfully usually less than 1% – don’t arrive with their owners, it’s really stinks when you get that sinking feeling as you realize your luggage hasn’t arrived with you.

There are two simple clever strategies I now always employ when flying with check bags, both for my own piece of mind and importantly to assist the airlines if indeed my bags don’t make it onto the carousel.

First, let’s talk about the magic of technology. I’ve invested in Apple AirTags for my checked luggage, and let me tell you, they’re game-changers. Even when my bags made it, being able to track their journey through the airport system gives me serious peace of mind. Knowing exactly where my bag is (safely tucked away in the hold of the plane) allows me to relax and enjoy my flight. Even better, some airlines are now integrating their systems with AirTags, allowing them to pinpoint lost luggage even faster. It’s a win-win! If you haven’t already, grab some AirTags before your next trip – they’re worth their weight in gold (or at least the cost of a new suitcase and its contents!).  The 4pack has gotten quite inexpensive and is easily bought through this link on Amazon

Beyond tech, there’s a simple, old-school trick that I swear by.  Inside each of my checked bags, right at the top, I place a large piece of paper or card stock containing my complete itinerary. Crucially, I include my flight information and my confirmation codes. Baggage tags can get damaged or torn off, leaving airline staff with a mystery suitcase and often they will open it to find clues. By placing a clear, easily accessible itinerary inside, you give them the information they need to quickly identify you and your reservation details, ensuring your bag can be routed to you as quickly as possible.

These two simple steps – using AirTags and including a detailed itinerary inside your luggage – can significantly reduce the stress and uncertainty of lost baggage. They’re proactive measures that empower both you and the airline to ensure a happy reunion with your belongings, even if your luggage takes an unexpected detour.
