As an avid traveler and animal lover, I’m always on the lookout for world-class wildlife experiences. And let me tell you, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, not only met my expectations but soared far above them! This isn’t just a zoo; it’s an immersive journey into diverse ecosystems, a conservation powerhouse, and a true testament to human ingenuity in showcasing the natural world.
While I visit Omaha quite regularly this recent trip to Omaha wouldn’t have been complete without a day dedicated to exploring this magnificent institution. This visit, however, was extra special. It had been nearly 20 years since I last walked these hallowed grounds, back when I brought my own kids. Now, it was my turn to share the magic with a new generation. Seeing their wide-eyed wonder brought back a flood of cherished memories, making this return even more profound.
From the moment we stepped through the gates, I knew we were in for something special – and it was clear why this zoo has consistently been voted #1 in the nation by countless publications and visitors.
A World Under Glass: The Desert Dome and Lied Jungle
One of the most iconic features, and rightly so, is the Desert Dome. Stepping inside is like being transported to a different continent. Underneath the world’s largest glazed geodesic dome, you’ll find arid landscapes teeming with fascinating desert flora and fauna from around the globe. I was captivated by the sheer variety of succulents, cacti, and the elusive creatures (like bobcats and peccaries!) that call these environments home. And don’t forget to venture underneath the dome to the Kingdoms of the Night, the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit – a truly unique experience that still blew me away after all these years.
Right next door, the Lied Jungle offers a stark and thrilling contrast. This massive indoor rainforest, one of the largest in the world, is an incredibly convincing recreation. The humidity, the sounds of tropical birds, and the lush vegetation instantly transport you. Monkeys swing overhead, tapirs meander through the undergrowth, and the vibrant colors of tropical birds create a mesmerizing spectacle. It’s easy to lose yourself for hours in this verdant paradise, and watching children gasp at the sight of the gibbons swinging freely was pure joy.
Aquatic Wonders and Frozen Frontiers
Beyond the terrestrial marvels, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium is a deep dive into the ocean’s mysteries. The walk-through shark tunnel is a definite highlight, offering an exhilarating perspective as majestic sharks glide just feet above your head. I was absolutely enthralled, especially with the various varieties of Jellyfish one sees! From vibrant coral reefs to chilling cold-water exhibits, the diversity of aquatic life on display is simply astounding.
And then there’s the Suzanne and Walter Scott Alaskan Adventure, a surprisingly vast and engaging exhibit that truly captures the spirit of the Alaskan wilderness. Seeing polar bears swim gracefully and sea otters frolic was a pure joy, reminding me of the incredible adaptations these animals have to thrive in extreme conditions. It was a delight to see that this section has only gotten better since my last visit.
Beyond the Big Exhibits: Endless Discoveries and a Legacy of “Wild Kingdom”
But the Henry Doorly Zoo’s magic extends far beyond these flagship attractions. I loved wandering through the Gorilla Valley, observing the impressive primate families, and exploring the African Grasslands, where rhinos, giraffes, and elephants roam in expansive, well-designed habitats. The attention to detail in replicating their natural environments is truly commendable, and my grandsons were mesmerized by the sheer scale of the animals.
Even the smaller exhibits, like the Butterfly and Insect Pavilion, offered delightful surprises and a chance to appreciate the often-overlooked wonders of the insect world.
And speaking of legacy, for those of us of a certain age, a visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo stirs memories of the iconic TV show, “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.” For decades, this groundbreaking program brought the wonders of wildlife into our living rooms, and it was largely sponsored by Omaha-based Mutual of Omaha. While not filmed exclusively at the zoo, the deep historical connection between the company, its commitment to wildlife education, and this world-class zoo is undeniable. It’s a testament to Omaha’s long-standing dedication to animal conservation, a legacy that clearly continues to thrive here.
A Commitment to Conservation
What truly sets the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium apart, however, is its deep commitment to conservation and education. Throughout my visit, I saw numerous examples of their dedication to species preservation, research, and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. It’s clear that this isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about making a real difference for wildlife globally. It fills me with hope to know that new generations, are learning about these critical efforts.
