Aside from a Post Office and Library, you won’t find any retail stores, rather a place brimming with both vibrant beauty and a quiet sense of the past.

One of the biggest draws for outdoor enthusiasts is Tyringham’s prime location along the Appalachian Trail. This iconic footpath snakes its way through the town, offering not one, but three distinct access points for hikers of all levels.

• Tyringham Cobble Trailhead: Located off Tyringham Road, this is perhaps the most well-known access point. The Cobble itself is a striking geological formation, a knobby hill offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A relatively short but rewarding hike takes you to the summit, where you can often spot thru-hikers taking a well-deserved break.
• Goose Pond Trailhead: Situated near the serene Goose Pond, this access point offers a more tranquil entry to the AT. The trail here meanders through wooded areas and along the shores of the pond, making it a picturesque option for a day hike or a longer backpacking trip.
• Mount Hunger Trailhead: For those seeking a more challenging climb, the Mount Hunger trailhead provides access to a steeper section of the AT. The ascent is rewarded with stunning vistas, making it a favorite among more experienced hikers.

Beyond the allure of the Appalachian Trail, Tyringham boasts cultivated beauty in the form of Ashintully Gardens. One of the properties cared for by The Trustees of Reservations, stepping into these gardens feels like entering a secret world. Originally the estate of sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson and his wife, Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, also a renowned sculptor, the gardens are a delightful mix of formal terraces, winding paths, and whimsical sculptures. The sound of the cascading water features adds a soothing soundtrack to your exploration. It’s a place where art and nature seamlessly intertwine, inviting quiet contemplation.

On the Ashintully Gardens property you’ll find the intriguing Titus Mansion Ruins. Destroyed by fire in the spring of 1952, this was once a grand 35-room mansion with 15 fireplaces and 10 bathrooms.  All that remains today are four Doric columns and some skeletal stone walls, overgrown with moss and vines. Walking through these remnants evokes a sense of mystery and allows your imagination to picture the life that once thrived within those walls. It’s a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the enduring power of nature.

For a dose of pure enchantment, a stop along the road to see the exterior of Santarella Gardens is a must. Known locally as the “Gingerbread House,” the former studio of sculptor Sir Henry Hudson Kitson (brother of Henry Hudson Kitson of Ashintully) is now a whimsical collection of gardens and unique structures. The iconic mushroom house, with its undulating roof, is straight out of a fairytale. Currently closed to the public, according to their website, a 5-year restoration project is underway to rehabilitate the 100-year-old historic American treasure.

Finally, a visit to Tyringham wouldn’t be complete without paying respects at the hundreds-of-years-old cemetery. Wandering through the weathered headstones offers a glimpse into the town’s long history and the lives of those who shaped it. Reading the inscriptions, some dating back to the 18th century, provides a tangible connection to the past and a quiet reflection on the generations that came before.
